Madeira Island has recently experienced a series of emergencies that have kept local authorities on high alert. These incidents have included a gas leak in Funchal, a landslide in Curral das Freiras, and multiple road incidents that have affected both residents and tourists.

Gas Leak in Funchal

On December 28, 2025, a gas leak was reported in a building located on Rua Dr. Carlos Varela, Funchal. The Funchal Fire Brigade was swiftly dispatched to the scene, deploying nine personnel with three vehicles. Despite gas detection equipment failing to register any levels, the overpowering smell of gas led to the shutdown of the main gas supply to the building as a precautionary measure.

Landslide in Curral das Freiras

Earlier in the day, a landslide occurred on the road to Curral de Cima, near the dam in Curral das Freiras, causing temporary closure. The Câmara de Lobos Volunteer Fire Brigade quickly responded, ensuring the road was signposted and cleared by 9 a.m., allowing normal traffic to resume with the assistance of local machinery.

Road Incidents Across Funchal

The roads of Funchal have witnessed several incidents. Notably, an 81-year-old driver was injured in a car accident on Rua dos Estados Unidos da América on December 27, 2025. The driver, suffering from lumbar pain, was taken to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça by the Funchal Fire Brigade, who attended with 13 personnel and four vehicles.

In another incident on December 26, 2025, a car caught fire near the Galeão nativity scene in São Roque. The Funchal Fire Brigade responded with 10 personnel and three vehicles to contain the fire efficiently.

Additionally, on Christmas night, a severe car accident occurred on Estrada Comandante Camacho de Freitas in Fundoa. Despite significant vehicle damage, the driver and passenger escaped unscathed. The Madeira Volunteer Fire Brigade attended with 11 personnel and four vehicles.
