Madeira Island witnessed a series of alarming vehicular incidents on January 31, 2026, sparking concerns about road safety among residents and tourists alike.
Car Fire on the Expressway
In the afternoon, the Volunteer Firefighters of Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol were dispatched to a car fire on the expressway at Serra de Água, just before the Encumeada tunnel. The alert was raised around 18:30. By the time the firefighters arrived with two vehicles and seven personnel, the fire was already extinguished. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
Rollover Near Hospital
Earlier that day, the Funchal Fire Brigade responded to a car rollover at the roundabout near the hospital around 5:30 AM. The driver, a man in his 30s, managed to exit the vehicle independently and was subsequently taken to the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for assessment. The scene was attended by 11 firefighters with three vehicles.
Car Crash and Fire on Estrada do Lazareto
Another incident involved a car that lost control, crashed into a wall, and caught fire on Estrada do Lazareto in Funchal. The Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters arrived on the scene with 10 personnel and two vehicles. The driver sustained a head injury and received immediate medical attention.
These incidents underscore the importance of road safety, particularly in areas with challenging driving conditions. Madeira's rugged terrain and winding roads require drivers to exercise caution at all times.
As authorities investigate these incidents, they urge drivers to adhere to traffic regulations and remain vigilant, especially during adverse weather conditions.
