In a troubling day for the city of Funchal, a series of violent incidents and a severe work accident have raised safety concerns among both residents and tourists. The Madeira Volunteer Firefighters, alongside the Public Security Police (PSP), were actively involved in responding to these emergencies.
Three Assaults in Funchal
The first assault took place around 3:40 PM near the Mercado dos Lavradores, a popular local market. A man in his 70s sustained injuries to his arm following an attack. Just two hours later, at 5:30 PM, a 53-year-old man was assaulted on Rua do Marquês, close to the Funchal City Hall. The final incident occurred at 6:50 PM on Caminho do Meio, where a man in his 40s suffered hand injuries.
Knife Attack on Caminho de São Roque
Earlier in the day, emergency services were called to Caminho de São Roque, following reports of a knife attack. A 67-year-old man was injured with a bladed weapon and required immediate medical attention. He was promptly transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, a central healthcare facility in Madeira.
Severe Work Accident at Vale da Ajuda
In another incident, a construction worker in his 30s was critically injured after being struck by several cement bags in a workplace accident on Rua Vale da Ajuda. The worker lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital, where he remains under intensive care.
