The Mega Nativity Scene (Presépio) at Jardim da Serra, Madeira, has become a major attraction for both locals and tourists. Spanning an impressive 800 square meters, this elaborate display is housed in a two-story garage and features a 230-meter linear path for visitors to explore.
António Fernandes, the project manager, highlighted the magnitude and intricate details of the nativity scene, which includes live animals and faithfully represents various aspects of traditional Madeiran life. The presépio attracts an average of 30,000 visitors annually, underscoring its popularity and cultural significance.
Now in its tenth edition, the Mega Nativity Scene began as a community-driven initiative, with early editions organized by the Associação Cultural e Recreativa Flor da Serra. This cultural association continues to play a vital role in preserving and showcasing Madeiran customs and traditions through such events.
Miguel Albuquerque, President of the Regional Government, praised the quality and authenticity of the display, noting that it provides a vivid depiction of the island's ethnographic history. Visitors can gain insight into how ancestors lived and celebrated, making it both an educational and festive experience.
The presépio not only celebrates the Christmas season but also serves as a cultural exhibition, offering a glimpse into Madeira's rich heritage and festive spirit. It stands as a testament to the island's dedication to preserving its unique cultural identity.
