Maritime Alert Extended in Madeira Amid Rough Sea Conditions
Madeira GuideThe Port of Funchal has extended the maritime agitation warning in Madeira due to anticipated severe sea conditions. Residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution.
The Port of Funchal has announced an extension to the strong maritime agitation warning for the Madeira archipelago. This warning, initially set to expire earlier, has now been extended until 6:00 AM on Monday, January 26, 2026.
This decision was made following forecasts from the Instituto PortuguĂŞs do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA), which indicated rough sea conditions with waves expected to reach between 5.5 and 7 meters. The northern coast of Madeira and the island of Porto Santo have been placed under an orange alert, the second highest warning level.
Authorities are urging the maritime community and the general public to strengthen the mooring of vessels and maintain a close watch on anchored boats. It is strongly advised to avoid walking near the sea or in exposed areas such as port breakwaters, cliffs, or beaches to prevent being caught by unexpected waves. Additionally, fishing activities should be postponed until conditions improve.
The rough seas are attributed to high winds and adverse weather patterns affecting the region. Such conditions are not uncommon during this time of year, requiring both locals and tourists to be vigilant and adhere to safety recommendations.
Madeira, known for its stunning coastlines and vibrant marine activities, often experiences these natural disruptions. The local government emphasizes safety and preparedness, especially during periods of heightened maritime activity.
