A 49-year-old man from Machico, Madeira, has been sentenced to six years in prison for committing domestic violence against his partner and children over the span of two decades.

In a landmark ruling, the Funchal Tribunal has sentenced a 49-year-old man residing in Machico, Madeira, to six years in prison for domestic violence against his long-term partner and their children. This decision, delivered on January 19, 2026, marks the end of a harrowing chapter of abuse that spanned nearly twenty years.

The case was brought to light by the Public Ministry, which accused the man of a range of abusive behaviors that began in 2005, when the victim was just 18 years old. The abuse included physical assaults, intimidation, humiliation, and control over personal life, as well as forced sexual relations.

The judgment was read in the Tribunal's Edifício 2000, where the judge confirmed the accusations, emphasizing that the actions of the accused went beyond normal family conflicts and constituted severe abuse. This abuse not only affected the man's partner but also had a profound impact on their two children.

The man, who was in preventive custody during the trial, now faces six years of imprisonment. The court's decision highlights the serious nature of domestic violence and the legal consequences that follow such actions.

Domestic violence is a critical issue in Madeira, and this case underscores the importance of legal intervention in protecting victims and upholding justice. The ruling serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat domestic violence and support survivors.
