The enchanting tradition of 'Cantar dos Reis' returned to Madeira with joyful celebrations held both in the heart of Funchal and at the Mercado da Penteada. This annual event, deeply rooted in Madeiran culture, brings together families, friends, and neighbors to sing traditional songs known as 'As Janeiras', signifying the spirit of community and sharing that is characteristic of the island.
On January 5th, the celebrations kicked off at the Jardim Municipal in Funchal, drawing dozens of participants to one of the island's most cherished cultural events. The atmosphere was further enlivened by the presence of a 30-meter long and 40-kilogram 'Bolo-Rei' cake, accompanied by 20 liters of ginja from Curral das Freiras, a local cherry liqueur that added a sweet touch to the festivities.
In tandem with the Funchal celebrations, the Câmara Municipal do Funchal hosted the 'Cantar dos Reis' at the Mercado da Penteada. This event, marking its fifth consecutive year, began at noon and featured performances from two local groups. The event underscores the enduring importance of this tradition across the island, as it is celebrated in various communities, each adding their own unique flavor to the festivities.
