Madeira's PSD Advocates for Updated European Support
Madeira GuideMadeira's PSD representatives call on the European Commission to revise the POSEI program, which hasn't been updated in over 20 years, to better support local agriculture amidst rising costs.
In a recent session at the Assembly of the Republic, Madeira's Social Democratic Party (PSD) representatives pressed for the European Commission to reconsider the funding allocations of the POSEI program. This call to action follows growing concerns over the financial sustainability of the region's agricultural sector.
The POSEI program, an essential financial aid mechanism for agriculture in outermost regions like Madeira, has not seen an update in over two decades. PSD Deputy Pedro Coelho highlighted the urgent need for this program to reflect current production costs, including energy, fertilizers, transportation, and labor.
Challenges Facing Madeira's Agriculture
Madeira's agriculture is facing significant challenges, exacerbated by outdated financial support structures. The local government has had to rely heavily on the regional budget to supplement inadequate POSEI funds, straining local resources.
Rising costs in essential areas such as energy and labor have put additional pressure on farmers, making the current financial aid insufficient to cover the growing expenses.
The Importance of POSEI for Madeira
POSEI (Programme of Options Specifically Relating to Remoteness and Insularity) is crucial for supporting agricultural activities in Madeira, providing funds that help offset the unique challenges faced by the island's remoteness and geographical constraints.
Deputy Coelho's remarks during the hearing with European Commissioner Maria Luís Albuquerque emphasized the need to adjust POSEI's financial provisions to better align with the modern economic landscape.
"Without an update, Madeira's agriculture risks falling behind, unable to compete or sustain itself," stated Deputy Coelho.
The plea for updated support is not only about sustaining the agricultural sector but also ensuring food security and economic stability for the island's residents.
