The Socialist Party calls for political unity against new mobility subsidy rules affecting Madeira and Azores residents.

The introduction of new rules governing the Social Mobility Subsidy has sparked significant controversy in Madeira and the Azores. The Socialist Party (PS) has made a public appeal for all political parties to unite against what they describe as an "attack" on the rights of island residents.

At a press conference, Eurico Brilhante Dias, along with Madeira and Azores representatives Emanuel Câmara and Francisco César, criticized the decree-law's impact on regional autonomy and the ability of island residents to travel within Portugal.

The Socialist Party has formally requested a parliamentary review of the decree, citing concerns over its implications for constitutional rights. Emanuel Câmara highlighted the changes as an "affront to the intelligence and wallets" of island residents, focusing on the new requirement to prove no outstanding debts to the tax and social security authorities.

Additionally, the subsidy reduction, now capped at 50% of the previous limit, raises concerns for residents traveling for health reasons or students with uncertain return dates. The cap reduction from 400 to 200 euros per trip is seen as a significant financial burden.

The PS urges bipartisan support for this initiative, emphasizing that only a collective political response can effectively represent the interests of Madeira and Azores residents.
