Madeira's Leaders Urge Prime Minister to Resolve Cargo Crisis
Madeira GuideAmidst a critical holiday period, Madeira's government appeals to the Prime Minister to address the cargo shipment disruptions at the Port of Leixões, threatening essential supplies.
The government of Madeira has made an urgent appeal to Portugal's Prime Minister to resolve a critical issue affecting the shipment of cargo to the island. The appeal comes during a crucial time as the year-end festivities approach, potentially impacting both locals and the tourism sector.
Miguel Albuquerque, the President of the Regional Government of Madeira, alongside José Manuel Rodrigues, the Secretary for Economy, have highlighted severe disruptions caused by a new IT system at the Port of Leixões. These disruptions are preventing the dispatch and entry of goods, essential for Madeira's supply chain, especially during the festive season.
Albuquerque described the situation as unprecedented and unacceptable, emphasizing the urgent need for national intervention. "The incredible situation at Port of Leixões is causing severe supply chain disruptions to the region," he stated. The leaders have warned that if the issue is not resolved by the morning of December 26, significant problems will arise for the transport of goods to Madeira and the Azores.
Rodrigues emphasized the potential economic impacts, stating that priority should be given to ships docking at Leixões and Lisbon. This prioritization is crucial to ensure that the economy, businesses, and families are not adversely affected during this festive period.
The government has requested that if goods can enter the Port of Leixões by December 26, all shipments can be loaded by the weekend. Failure to resolve these issues could lead to significant disruptions during the New Year celebrations, as essential supplies might not arrive as planned.
