Taking place annually, the Night Market is a vibrant affair that embodies the spirit of Christmas and the cultural heritage of Madeira. The streets are filled with the sounds of Christmas music and the chatter of people, creating a lively atmosphere that is hard to match.
A Night of Tradition and Community
The festivities officially began shortly after 7 PM with the symbolic presence of Funchal's Mayor, Jorge Carvalho, along with his executive team and a local Christmas band. This ceremonial start took place at the beginning of Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas, marking the official commencement of the evening's events.
Mayor Carvalho emphasized the importance of maintaining traditional activities, which are a staple of the holiday season in Madeira. Despite limited time for innovation, the focus was on ensuring that the essence of the Night Market was preserved, providing a familiar yet exciting experience for both locals and visitors.
"We didn't have much time to innovate, but we managed to maintain our traditions and offer everyone the conditions for another great Night Market," said Jorge Carvalho, Mayor of Funchal.
