In response to a severe storm forecast, Madeira's Electric Company has deployed over 100 workers to ensure power stability during New Year's Eve, with over 60% of energy expected from renewable sources.

Madeira Island is bracing for a significant storm on New Year's Eve, prompting the Empresa de Electricidade da Madeira (EEM) to mobilize over 100 operational staff to manage the anticipated challenges to the island's power infrastructure.

The Central T茅rmica da Vit贸ria, the largest power plant on the island, will be a focal point of these efforts. It will have 24 workers, including machinists and dispatch teams, working continuously throughout the night to maintain operations. This proactive measure aims to address any disruptions caused by the adverse weather conditions.

While the storm poses risks to the electrical network, there is an unexpected environmental upside. Due to the forecasted wind and rain, EEM anticipates that more than 60% of the energy generated during the night will come from renewable sources. This highlights the island's ongoing commitment to sustainable energy practices.

The decision to mobilize such a significant workforce underlines the importance of maintaining power stability during a time when many residents and tourists are celebrating the New Year. The EEM's proactive approach ensures that the festivities can continue with minimal interruption, safeguarding both the island's infrastructure and its reputation as a reliable tourist destination.

For those unfamiliar with Madeira, the Central T茅rmica da Vit贸ria is situated near the city of Funchal, the island's capital, which is known for its vibrant New Year's Eve celebrations, including a spectacular fireworks display that attracts visitors from around the world.
