Madeira Pushes for Urgent Implementation of Lung Cancer Screening Pilot
Madeira GuideOn World Cancer Day, the Socialist Party advocates for an immediate lung cancer screening pilot in Madeira, highlighting its critical need due to high mortality rates.
The Socialist Party of Madeira is calling for the immediate implementation of a lung cancer screening pilot project in the region. This initiative was put forward on World Cancer Day, emphasizing the urgent need for early detection measures due to the high incidence of lung cancer-related deaths on the island.
The proposal was presented in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, with Marta Freitas, a Socialist Party deputy, underscoring the alarming statistics surrounding lung cancer in the region. In 2023, Madeira reported 106 deaths from malignant neoplasms of the trachea, bronchi, and lungs, translating to a mortality rate of 41.5 per 100,000 inhabitants. This rate is notably high compared to other regions, making lung cancer the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Madeira.
Despite previous announcements by the then Secretary of Health and Civil Protection, Pedro Ramos, regarding plans to implement such a screening in 2025, there have been no significant advancements. The lack of structured screening programs has contributed to late diagnoses, which are often made at advanced stages, hence the call for immediate action.
Freitas pointed out that international studies support the effectiveness of early screening using low-dose computed tomography (CT) scans, which can significantly reduce mortality rates by identifying cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage. This scientific backing strengthens the case for launching the pilot project without further delay.
The initiative's implementation is crucial not only for the residents but also for maintaining Madeira's reputation as a health-conscious destination for tourists, many of whom are drawn to the island's natural beauty and clean air.
As Madeira continues to combat high lung cancer mortality rates, the call for a pilot screening project reflects a proactive step towards improving public health outcomes and aligning with international best practices.
