Madeira's public transport system introduces three-digit numbering for buses to eliminate confusion and simplify travel. This change aims to unify the network without altering schedules or routes.

In a significant move to streamline public transportation on Madeira Island, buses will now be identified by three-digit numbers. This initiative, led by Transportes Integrados e Intermodais da Madeira (TIIM), is designed to eliminate duplicate numbering across different transport operators, thereby simplifying travel for both residents and tourists.

The change is part of a broader modernization effort that began in July 2024 with the introduction of the SIGA system. The current update focuses on unifying the transport network by implementing a sequential numbering system applicable to all operators in the archipelago.

Previously, overlapping bus numbers from various companies such as Companhia de Autocarros da Madeira (CAM), Horários do Funchal (HF), and SIGA Rodoeste often led to confusion among passengers. For example, multiple 'Route 7' buses served different destinations, including Ribeira Brava and Travessa do Pomar. The new numbering system resolves this issue by assigning a unique three-digit number to each route.

Importantly, this change does not affect the existing bus schedules or routes. The buses will continue to operate at the same times and cover the same areas. Initially, the updated numbering will be visible on digital platforms, including vehicle information panels and official websites. Physical updates, such as changes to signage and bus stop information, will follow progressively.

To assist passengers during this transition, the new numbering grid is available online and in informational brochures at ticket sales points. This approach ensures a smooth adjustment for all users.
