Madeira Mourns: A Week of Tender Farewells

This week, the island of Madeira has witnessed the passing of four cherished community members, each leaving behind a legacy of love and family. The communal spirit of this beautiful island shines through as locals gather to pay their respects and celebrate the lives of Maria Albertina de Carvalho, Rosa Perestrelo de Freitas Silva, Maria Bernardete de Abreu, and Agostinho de Nóbrega Gouveia Marques.

Maria Albertina de Carvalho, a long-time resident of Sítio da Igreja, Água de Pena, Machico, passed away on May 1, 2026. Her funeral is scheduled for May 2, starting from the Funeral Home in Santa Cruz, proceeding to the Parish Church of Água de Pena, and concluding with burial at the local cemetery.

Rosa Perestrelo de Freitas Silva, who resided on Rua Nossa Senhora de Belém, Referta, Porto da Cruz, was also laid to rest this week. Her funeral took place on Friday, with services held at the New Municipal Cemetery Chapel in Porto da Cruz.

The community of Câmara de Lobos honored the memory of Maria Bernardete de Abreu, who passed away on April 29. Her funeral was held on April 30, starting from the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital and concluding at the local cemetery.

Agostinho de Nóbrega Gouveia Marques, a resident of Serrado, Porto da Cruz, was remembered in a ceremony on April 30, with services at the New Municipal Cemetery Chapel.

These moments of collective mourning reflect Madeira's deep-rooted cultural traditions of honoring and remembering those who have passed. Each ceremony was marked by heartfelt eulogies and a profound sense of community.
