The Madeira Regional Government has announced a comprehensive support package to mitigate the effects of the current energy crisis on the local economy and society.

The Madeira Regional Government unveiled a strategic support package aimed at mitigating the repercussions of the ongoing energy crisis on April 1, 2026. The initiative, announced by the Secretary of Economy, José Manuel Rodrigues, focuses on safeguarding business competitiveness, employment, and household purchasing power.

Triggered by the escalating fuel prices due to the Iran conflict, the support measures are set to last for three months, providing immediate relief to the most affected sectors. The initiative is structured around five main areas of intervention.

Key Support Measures

  • €400,000 allocated to public passenger transport.
  • €110,000 allocated to the taxi sector, providing €135 per vehicle, €15 more than on the mainland.
  • Increase in the gas bottle subsidy from €20 to €25, benefiting approximately 3,300 families under the 'Gas Solidarity' program.
  • Support for Firefighter Associations, with €360 for each heavy vehicle and €120 per light vehicle, covering 137 vehicles in total.
  • Subsidy of up to €600 for each Private Institution of Social Solidarity (IPSS).
  • Support of €0.10 per liter for colored diesel used in fishing.

Besides financial supports, the regional government will maintain a fuel price differential of €0.10 in the region compared to mainland Portugal, starting the following Monday. This measure aims to further alleviate the financial burden on residents.

José Manuel Rodrigues emphasized the importance of these measures in maintaining economic stability and ensuring that the local community can continue to thrive despite global challenges.
