Madeira Launches First Instructor Course for Cadet and Junior Firefighters

The Serviço Regional de Proteção Civil (SRPC) of Madeira is taking a significant step by hosting its first Instructor Course for the Escola de Cadetes e Infantes dos Bombeiros. This initiative, conducted between May 14 and 16, 2026, is a collaborative effort with the Escola Nacional de Bombeiros and seeks to enhance the pedagogical and technical skills of local firefighters.
The training is being held at the SRPC's Training and Exercise Center and involves 18 firefighters from across the region. The primary aim is to strengthen their abilities to mentor and guide children and teenagers, aged 6 to 17, who are part of the cadet and junior firefighter programs.
Richard Marques, President of the SRPC, emphasized the course's importance during the opening session. He noted that the initiative is designed to broaden and strengthen the network of Cadet and Junior Firefighter Schools across the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The goal is to attract more young people to volunteer with the fire services, thereby promoting a culture of safety, citizenship, and civil protection within the community.
The course, which spans 20 hours, is co-funded by the European Social Fund+ through the Madeira 2030 Program. Currently, Madeira hosts two such schools located in Câmara de Lobos and Santana, engaging over 80 young participants.
Marco Martins, a board member of the Escola Nacional de Bombeiros, also attended the event's commencement. He highlighted the strategic investment in educating the younger generation, which fosters values of citizenship, solidarity, and volunteerism, contributing to the sustainability of future volunteer efforts in Madeira's fire services.
