Madeira Launches First Cadet Instructor Course for Future Firefighters

In a significant step towards fostering a culture of safety and volunteerism, the Autonomous Region of Madeira has launched its inaugural Cadet and Infant Firefighter Instructor Course. This pioneering initiative, taking place from May 14 to 16, 2026, is organized by the Serviço Regional de Protecção Civil and facilitated by the Escola Nacional de Bombeiros.

Held at the SRPC's Training and Development Center, the course attracts 18 firefighters from across the region. Their mission is to enhance pedagogical and technical skills to better guide children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 who are part of the Cadet and Infant Schools of the Fire Corps.

The course's opening session featured Richard Marques, President of the Regional Civil Protection Service, who emphasized the initiative's goal to expand and strengthen the network of Cadet and Infant Schools across Madeira. This effort aims to recruit more young volunteers into firefighting, fostering a community-oriented culture of safety and civic responsibility.

Marco Martins, a member of the National Firefighters School's Board, also attended the opening, underscoring the strategic importance of this training. The course, which lasts 20 hours, is co-funded by the European Social Fund+ under the Madeira 2030 Program.

Currently, Madeira hosts two Cadet and Infant Schools in Câmara de Lobos and Santana, engaging over 80 youths. The introduction of this instructor course marks a strategic investment in nurturing future generations, instilling values of citizenship, solidarity, and emergency preparedness.

The initiative not only aims to sustain volunteerism in the region's firefighting services but also contributes to community resilience by embedding a culture of safety and civil protection among the youth.
