Madeira Government Urges National Action to Prevent Supply Chain Disruption
Madeira GuideThe Regional Government of Madeira has called for urgent national intervention to address a critical supply chain disruption affecting the island during the festive season.
The Regional Government of Madeira, led by President Miguel Albuquerque and Secretary of Economy José Manuel Rodrigues, has issued an urgent appeal to the Prime Minister of Portugal to resolve a critical supply chain issue threatening the archipelago's economy and residents.
The disruption stems from problems at the Porto de Leixões, where a new computerized system is causing significant delays in cargo processing. This situation has led to severe supply chain interruptions, jeopardizing the delivery of essential goods to Madeira and the Azores during the crucial end-of-year period.
Albuquerque expressed grave concerns over the situation, describing it as unprecedented in Madeira's history. "The unbelievable situation at Porto de Leixões is causing severe supply chain disruptions," he stated, emphasizing the urgent need for national government intervention to prevent further problems for the island's population.
José Manuel Rodrigues highlighted the potential for serious consequences if the issue is not resolved promptly. "If the situation is not addressed by the morning of December 26, we could face significant challenges in transporting goods to Madeira and the Azores," he warned.
The government has requested priority treatment for ships docking at Leixões and Lisbon, ensuring speedy loading of containers destined for the archipelagos. This measure aims to prevent economic and social disruptions during the festive season when demand for goods peaks.
This logistical challenge, if unresolved, could severely impact the end-of-year celebrations in Madeira, a key tourist destination known for its vibrant New Year festivities.
