The Madeira Chamber of Commerce has urged the regional government to reconsider the newly imposed rent-a-car tax, citing unresolved issues and potential impacts on tourism and local businesses.

The regional government of Madeira is under pressure from the Madeira Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACIF-CCIM) to suspend the new tax imposed on the rent-a-car industry. This request comes after the implementation of the tax outlined in Portaria n.º 214/2026, effective since May 21, 2026.

According to ACIF-CCIM, the tax, which aims to regulate the rent-a-car market, has not been thoroughly evaluated, leaving several concerns unaddressed. The Chamber argues that these unresolved issues could have significant impacts on the tourism sector, a cornerstone of Madeira's economy.

Government's Response

In response, the Regional Secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure stated that the government acknowledges the concerns raised by ACIF-CCIM. However, they emphasized the necessity of the tax as a means to standardize the car rental industry and enhance regulatory oversight.

The Secretary further mentioned that while the government is open to dialogue, the primary goal remains to ensure a balanced approach that benefits both the local economy and environmental sustainability.

Impact on Tourism

With tourism being a significant part of Madeira's economy, stakeholders worry that the new tax could deter tourists from using rental services, thus affecting local businesses that rely heavily on tourism traffic.

Madeira, known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant cultural heritage, attracts tourists from around the globe. The availability and affordability of rental cars play a crucial role in enhancing visitors' experiences by providing easy access to the island's attractions.

Future Discussions

ACIF-CCIM has proposed further discussions with the government to address their concerns and find a solution that aligns with the interests of all parties involved, including tourists, local businesses, and the government.

The outcome of these discussions will be crucial in determining the future of the rent-a-car industry on the island and its impact on Madeira's tourism sector.
