Madeira Island witnessed a series of critical incidents on Christmas Day, engaging local emergency services in a display of prompt and coordinated response. From a car accident involving a newborn to a medical emergency requiring forcible entry, and a wildfire in Ponta do Sol, the day was marked by significant challenges.

Car Accident on the Expressway

At approximately 23:30, a car accident occurred on the expressway in the Viveiros tunnel, heading from Funchal to Caniço. The accident involved a newborn baby and a man, both of whom were transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça. The baby was taken as a precautionary measure, while the man sustained minor injuries. The scene was attended by eight members of the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses (BVM) and a Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa (CVP) ambulance.

Medical Emergency in Funchal

Earlier in the evening, at 21:48, BVM firefighters were called to a residence on Rua Pedro José de Ornelas, Funchal. A man in his seventies was experiencing a medical emergency, prompting firefighters to force entry into the property to provide assistance. The individual was subsequently taken to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for further care.

Wildfire in Ponta do Sol

In another part of the island, at the site of Poios in Ponta do Sol, a wildfire broke out around 20:38. The blaze, suspected to have been started by a hot air balloon or fireworks, was tackled by the Bombeiros Voluntários da Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol. The firefighting team, consisting of five members and two vehicles, spent approximately two hours bringing the fire under control.

These incidents highlight the commitment and efficiency of Madeira's emergency services, ensuring safety and rapid response across the island's diverse challenges, from urban to rural areas.
