On April 6, Madeira marks World Physical Activity Day with various events to promote healthy lifestyles. The initiative, led by Funchal City Council, includes activities like cycling, climbing, and health screenings, emphasizing the benefits of regular exercise.

Madeira Island is set to celebrate World Physical Activity Day on April 6, a global initiative by the World Health Organization (WHO) aimed at raising awareness about the importance of regular exercise for health and well-being. The event, occurring a day before World Health Day, underscores the significance of combating sedentarism, a major risk factor for chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

To commemorate this day, the Funchal City Council organized a series of activities at the Parque da Nazaré on April 5, encouraging participation from residents and tourists alike. The event was designed to be inclusive and appealing, featuring activities suitable for all ages.

  • Arborism
  • Climbing
  • Cycling

  • Traditional games
  • Chess
  • Petanque
  • Health screenings

These activities were supported by the Sports Division of the Funchal City Council, in collaboration with various invited entities. The goal was to foster a community spirit and promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles through fun and engaging means.

Helena Leal, the councilor responsible for sports, emphasized the importance of making physical activity accessible and attractive, noting its vital role in preventing sedentarism and improving quality of life. She highlighted that the municipality's ongoing strategy focuses on promoting sports for all, supported by community-driven policies and open-access activities.

“These initiatives aim to bring families together in a range of diverse activities, showcase the efforts of local sports associations and clubs, and raise awareness about the physical, mental, and social benefits of regular exercise.”
