The beloved tradition of Cantar dos Reis returns to Madeira, captivating both locals and tourists with lively celebrations in Funchal's Municipal Garden and the Penteada Market.

The island of Madeira once again comes alive with the vibrant sounds of the traditional "Cantar dos Reis," a celebration deeply rooted in local culture. This year, the festivities took place in two significant locations: the heart of Funchal and the bustling Penteada Market.

In Funchal, the celebrations were marked by the gathering of dozens of participants in the Municipal Garden. This event is one of the most emblematic cultural manifestations of the Christmas season in Madeira, attracting families, friends, and neighbors who come together to sing and celebrate.

Adding to the festive spirit, a massive Bolo-Rei, measuring 30 meters and weighing 40 kilograms, was shared among attendees. This traditional Portuguese cake, often associated with Epiphany, was accompanied by 20 liters of ginja, a popular cherry liqueur from Curral das Freiras, enhancing the celebratory atmosphere.

Simultaneously, the Penteada Market also hosted its own "Cantar dos Reis" event, organized by the Câmara Municipal do Funchal. This marks the fifth consecutive year that the market has celebrated this tradition, which symbolizes the spirit of community and sharing that is characteristic of the Madeiran people.

These celebrations are not just about music; they are a warm reminder of Madeira's rich cultural heritage and an opportunity for both locals and visitors to experience the island's unique traditions. The "Cantar dos Reis" involves singing 'As Janeiras,' a set of traditional songs performed during this time of the year to spread joy and goodwill.
