In a vibrant celebration of youth spirit and community involvement, Madeira marked the centenary of the "Day of Thinking" with a series of events that highlighted the island's commitment to youth associations. The celebrations, which extended throughout the weekend, attracted more than 800 young participants, underscoring the robust vitality of scouting, guiding, and youth associations in the region.
The "Day of Thinking," celebrated annually on February 22nd, commemorates the birthdays of Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, and Olave Baden-Powell, the first World Chief Guide. This year's centenary celebration focused on the theme of fraternity and community service, encouraging participants to reflect on shared values and global unity.
Paula Margarido, the Regional Secretary for Inclusion, Social Security, and Youth, represented the Regional Government at these events. On Saturday, she joined the celebrations organized by the Corpo Nacional de Escutas at Porto da Cruz, where approximately 630 participants, including children, youth leaders, and volunteers, gathered. Margarido reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting youth associations, recognizing their role in fostering community spirit and leadership among young people.
On Sunday, the festivities continued at the Santa Luzia Gardens in Funchal. Here, Margarido engaged directly with young scouts and guides, asking them to express what the "Day of Thinking" meant to them. The young participants responded with enthusiasm, highlighting the day as a moment to help others and to honor the legacy of the Baden-Powells.
This year's celebration holds particular significance as it marks 100 years of the "Day of Thinking," a milestone that reinforces the event's importance in promoting fraternity and a commitment to community service among youth worldwide.
