Key political figures in Madeira and Azores call on the EU to prioritize the strategic importance of the Atlantic in its upcoming financial framework.

In a recent summit held in Madeira, political leaders from Madeira and the Azores have called on the European Union (EU) to enhance the significance of the Atlantic regions in its upcoming financial strategies. The summit, marking 50 years of autonomy and development, highlighted the need for the EU to recognize the geopolitical and economic importance of the Atlantic, particularly its outermost regions.

The summit saw the participation of Paulo do Nascimento Cabral, a Member of the European Parliament from the Azores, who emphasized the strategic necessity for the EU to invest more in the Outermost Regions (RUP) in the next Multiannual Financial Framework. Cabral's visit to Madeira included a meeting with Miguel Albuquerque, the President of the Regional Government of Madeira, where they discussed regional development and strategic interests.

The call for stronger EU focus on the Atlantic is seen as a push to ensure that Madeira and the Azores play a central role in the EU's geopolitical strategies. This comes amid broader discussions on how to leverage the unique geographical positions of these regions for economic and strategic advantages.

Madeira's rich history as an autonomous region for the past 50 years was celebrated during the summit. The focus on strengthening ties with the EU aligns with the region's ongoing efforts to boost its economic development through increased EU support.
