Madeira's Secretary of Education has launched a new initiative to restore the service years lost by teachers during career transitions since 2008.

The government of Madeira is taking significant steps towards addressing a long-standing issue affecting the region's educators. The Secretary of Education, Science, and Technology has announced a new process aimed at recovering the service years lost by teachers during career transitions since 2008. This initiative is expected to have a positive impact on teachers who have faced career disruptions and financial setbacks due to the loss of service time.

According to Francisco Oliveira, President of the Sindicato dos Professores da Madeira (SPM), the decision marks a breakthrough in negotiations that have been ongoing for years. The recovery of these service years has been a critical demand from the teaching community, as many educators felt disadvantaged by the previous system that failed to recognize their full service history.

The Sindicato Democrático dos Professores da Madeira (SDPM) also expressed satisfaction with the agreement reached, highlighting that it includes teachers from the private sector, mainland Portugal, and the Azores. The recovery process will officially commence on September 1, 2026, with subsequent adjustments scheduled for the same day in 2027.

José Nunes, a representative of the SDPM, stated that this agreement represents one of three important legislative changes under discussion, emphasizing its significance in restoring fairness to teachers' careers.

This initiative comes as a relief to many educators in Madeira who have long sought recognition of their service years. The agreement is seen as a crucial step in ensuring that teachers are fairly compensated for their contributions to education in the region.
