Machico Mourns the Loss of Three Esteemed Residents

The community of Machico, located on the scenic Madeira Island, is in mourning following the deaths of three esteemed residents: José Marques Ribeiro, Manuel Rodrigues Canada, and António Martins. These individuals were cherished by their families and the larger community, each having contributed in their unique ways to the social fabric of the region.

José Marques Ribeiro, a long-time resident of Vereda do Ribeiro das Voltas in Machico, passed away on January 10, 2026. He is survived by his family, who expressed their gratitude to the medical staff at Hospital dos Marmeleiros and the Machico Health Center for their exceptional care.

His funeral is scheduled for Monday, January 12, 2026, beginning at the Funeral Home Olival and proceeding to the Parish Church of Ribeira Seca for a mass, followed by interment at the Machico Municipal Cemetery.

Manuel Rodrigues Canada, who lived at Sítio do Paraíso in Machico, also left behind a grieving family. His funeral will be held on Sunday, with services at the Machico Main Church.

The family has planned a memorial mass for the seventh day after his passing, to be held on January 15, 2026, and has extended their gratitude to the staff at Santa Casa da Misericórdia for their caring support.

António Martins, from Beco da Pontinha B in Machico, will be remembered by his family and friends in a funeral service on Saturday. The service will take place at the Machico Main Church, with a subsequent burial at the local cemetery.

His family has also scheduled a memorial mass for January 15, 2026, to honor his memory, expressing thanks to the emergency staff at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.
