Liberal Initiative Pushes for Disease Mobility Rights for Madeira's Teachers
Madeira GuideThe Liberal Initiative proposes extending the disease mobility regime to teachers with ties to Madeira, addressing a legal gap that affects educators seeking family proximity in times of illness.
In a significant move to address legal disparities affecting educators, the Liberal Initiative has proposed extending the disease mobility regime to teachers with ties to Madeira. This initiative seeks to rectify an oversight in the current legislation that limits mobility options for teachers in times of illness.
Currently, the disease mobility regime, as stipulated by Decree-Law No. 41/2022, allows teachers from Portugal's mainland to relocate to schools within the mainland, but it does not apply the same provisions to Madeira. This leaves teachers from Madeira or those with familial ties to the region at a disadvantage when seeking proximity to family during health crises.
Gonçalo Maia Camelo, a deputy from the Liberal Initiative in the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, has been vocal about the need for this change. He argues that the current framework creates an unfair barrier for public sector teachers, particularly those facing health challenges who require familial support and improved clinical care.
The proposal aims to align Madeira's policies with those of the Azores, where disease mobility for teachers is already accommodated. By doing so, the Liberal Initiative hopes to ensure equal treatment for all teachers, protect personal and familial stability in illness, and remove administrative hurdles that prevent family reunification.
This move is also seen as a strategy to retain teaching professionals in Madeira, preventing the outflow of skilled educators and their families to other regions of Portugal. The initiative underscores the importance of creating a supportive environment for teachers, which is crucial for the region's educational stability and quality.
