The Liberal Initiative is advocating for a legislative change that would allow teachers with health issues to transfer to Madeira, aligning the island's policies with the Azores and mainland Portugal.

The Liberal Initiative, through its representative in the Madeira Legislative Assembly, Gonçalo Maia Camelo, has introduced a resolution to the Regional Government proposing the extension of health-based mobility for educators. This initiative aims to allow teachers who are linked to the public education system in mainland Portugal or the Azores to transfer to Madeira for health-related reasons.

Currently, the health-based mobility provision, as outlined in Decree-Law No. 41/2022, permits educators to move from Madeira and the Azores to the mainland for health reasons, but not the reverse. This has been identified as a significant legal gap, creating unequal treatment among teachers and hindering their ability to be near family and receive necessary medical care.

The Liberal Initiative argues that this discrepancy leads to personal and professional instability and may encourage educators to leave Madeira in search of better conditions elsewhere, a situation that contrasts with the more inclusive policy of the Azores. The proposed change is seen as a step towards equality, aiming to keep educators in Madeira and support their personal and familial needs during times of health crisis.

By addressing this issue, the Liberal Initiative hopes to not only provide equal treatment for educators across Portugal but also enhance the attractiveness of Madeira as a permanent home for professionals. This change is expected to prevent the outflow of educators and their families from the region, thereby strengthening the local educational infrastructure.
