The JPP has filed a protest in response to remarks questioning the fairness of subsidizing Madeira's travel costs, emphasizing the constitutional importance of mobility.

In a significant political move, the Juntos pelo Povo (JPP) party has lodged a formal protest against statements made by Hugo Soares, the parliamentary leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD). The declarations, which were uttered during a parliamentary session, questioned the fairness of using taxpayer money to subsidize travel for residents of Madeira and the Azores.

The core of the controversy stems from Soares' suggestion that it might be unjust for Portuguese taxpayers to continue funding travel for citizens of the autonomous regions who allegedly do not fulfill their tax obligations. This comment has sparked a heated debate regarding the nature of mobility subsidies within Portugal.

Filipe Sousa, the JPP deputy, has vehemently opposed these statements, arguing that they foster a divisive narrative among Portuguese citizens. He emphasized that mobility is not merely a subsidy but a constitutional right aimed at ensuring national cohesion. Sousa insists that referring to mobility support as a 'subsidy' is both politically and legally incorrect.

"Mobility is a constitutional instrument of national cohesion," Sousa stated. "Madeirans and Azoreans contribute to the national budget just like any other Portuguese citizens, and their rights should not be undermined by misconceived narratives."

The protest highlights the importance of the mobility regime as part of Portugal's commitment to territorial continuity and national solidarity. JPP contends that linking this regime to individual fiscal behavior could lead to unjust stigmatization of island residents.

Madeira, an autonomous region, relies heavily on such mobility arrangements to maintain its economic and social ties with mainland Portugal. The JPP's protest underscores the critical role of these arrangements in supporting regional development and integration.
