JPP Proposes Unique Patronage Regime for Madeira and Azores
Madeira GuideThe Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party has submitted a proposal for a unique patronage regime for Madeira and the Azores, aiming to ease funding challenges for local cultural, scientific, and environmental organizations.
The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP), a prominent opposition party in Madeira, has announced the submission of a legislative proposal to establish a unique patronage regime for the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores. This initiative is designed to address the significant challenges faced by local organizations in securing funding for cultural, scientific, and environmental activities.
On January 31, 2026, Francisco José Cardoso of JPP outlined the plan, which has been forwarded to the Assembly of the Republic. The proposal outlines a framework to support clubs, associations, and institutions dedicated to scientific research, artistic creation, cultural development, and environmental and social protection.
Madeira and the Azores, as autonomous regions of Portugal, have unique cultural and environmental landscapes that often require tailored support structures. The JPP argues that these regions face additional hurdles in attracting sponsorship and funding compared to mainland Portugal.
The proposed regime aims to provide a specialized approach to patronage, encouraging investments from both local and international benefactors. By fostering a supportive environment for cultural and scientific endeavors, the JPP believes this initiative will enhance the regions' capabilities in innovation and cultural preservation.
This move is seen as a critical step towards empowering local communities and promoting sustainable development in Madeira and the Azores. If approved, the legislation could serve as a model for other autonomous regions seeking similar frameworks.
