JPP Highlights Failures in Protecting Madeira's Beekeepers
Madeira GuideThe JPP party has raised concerns over inadequate support for beekeepers affected by American Foulbrood disease in Madeira, urging government action.
The Juntos pelo Povo (JPP) party has brought attention to significant shortcomings in the support provided to beekeepers in Madeira, who have been severely impacted by the outbreak of American Foulbrood disease. This bacterial infection has necessitated the drastic measure of burning affected hives to prevent its spread.
The disease was initially detected in May 2024 in the areas of Santana, Ilha, and São Jorge. Following the sanitary protocol, infected colonies were destroyed to protect the regional bee population. However, the JPP claims that the regional government, specifically the Secretaria Regional da Agricultura, Pescas e Ambiente (SRAPA), has failed to offer adequate assistance to those affected.
Beekeeping is a vital part of Madeira's agricultural sector, contributing not only to local biodiversity but also supporting the island's economy through honey production and pollination services. The JPP's call for action underscores the need for immediate government intervention to provide financial support and resources to the affected beekeepers.
In response to the growing concerns, the JPP has urged the government to implement measures that ensure the sustainability of beekeeping on the island. These measures should include financial aid, replacement of colonies, and continuous monitoring to prevent future outbreaks.
This is a drastic, but necessary measure to contain the spread of the disease.
