JPP Criticizes ARAE's Actions in Santana as Politically Motivated
Madeira GuideThe JPP has accused ARAE of acting as a 'political tool' for the PSD following an aggressive inspection at Santana's Agricultural Market, voicing strong support for local farmers.
In a recent political controversy in Madeira, the Juntos pelo Povo (JPP) party has accused the Regional Authority for Economic Activities (ARAE) of operating as a 'political tool' for the Social Democratic Party (PSD). This accusation follows a contentious inspection conducted by ARAE at the Agricultural Market of Santana in late 2025.
JPP's spokesperson, Élvio Sousa, voiced his discontent during a parliamentary group visit to the market. He criticized ARAE's approach as 'muscular and arrogant,' arguing that it unfairly targets modest farmers who rely heavily on their agricultural income.
The inspection was perceived as a humiliation to local producers, many of whom are elderly individuals living on low pensions. These farmers are credited with preserving Madeira's agricultural traditions and cultivating quality produce, such as the famous 'pão de Santana' (Santana bread).
Souza emphasized JPP's unwavering support for the agricultural community in Santana, pledging to oppose any actions that demean or undermine the efforts of local producers.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between political factions in Madeira and raises concerns about the use of regulatory bodies for political ends. Local farmers, who are central to Madeira's cultural and economic fabric, have found themselves at the heart of this dispute.
