IVBAM Hosts Workshop on Natural, Organic, and Biodynamic Wines in Madeira
Madeira GuideThe Madeira Wine, Embroidery, and Handicraft Institute (IVBAM) held a workshop focused on natural, organic, and biodynamic wines, highlighting sustainable wine-making practices.
The Madeira Wine, Embroidery, and Handicraft Institute (IVBAM) recently organized a two-day workshop on January 22nd and 23rd, focusing on natural, organic, and biodynamic wines. The event took place at the IVBAM headquarters located on Rua 5 de Outubro in Funchal, the capital of Madeira.
This initiative comes amid a growing interest in wines produced through more sustainable practices, emphasizing respect for the terroir and minimal enological intervention. Such wine styles prioritize agricultural practices that avoid synthetic chemicals and encourage manual harvesting, setting them apart from conventional wine-making methods.
Natural wines are produced with minimal intervention both in the vineyard and the cellar, often without added sulfites. Organic wines are made from grapes grown without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides, adhering to organic farming standards. Biodynamic wines go a step further by incorporating holistic farming practices that consider the vineyard as part of an ecosystem, often following the lunar calendar for planting and harvesting.
The workshop drew participants from various backgrounds, eager to learn about these innovative wine-making approaches that align with current environmental concerns. This training reflects Madeira's commitment to promoting sustainable and responsible tourism, as wine production is a significant aspect of the island's cultural heritage and economic activity.
