Madeira braces for severe maritime conditions as IPMA issues an orange warning for high waves and strong winds.

The Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) has issued an orange weather warning for the northern coast of Madeira and Porto Santo, indicating severe maritime conditions expected from February 5th to 6th. This alert warns residents and tourists of potentially dangerous sea conditions, with waves predicted to reach up to 12 meters.

Starting from 3 PM on Thursday, February 5th, until noon the following day, the northern coast of Madeira and Porto Santo will experience significant maritime agitation. The waves, driven by northwesterly winds, are expected to be between 5 to 7 meters in height, with some waves possibly reaching up to 12 meters.

Before this orange warning, a yellow warning was already in place starting from 7:09 PM on February 3rd, lasting until 6 AM of February 4th. This escalation to an orange warning indicates worsening conditions, necessitating heightened caution from both residents and tourists.

Madeira's rugged northern coast is known for its dramatic landscapes, attracting tourists seeking adventure and natural beauty. However, these conditions necessitate caution and awareness, particularly for those engaging in activities near the coastline.

Authorities advise avoiding coastal areas and heeding local warnings during this period. The IPMA regularly updates weather advisories, and it is crucial for all inhabitants and visitors to stay informed about the latest developments.
