The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued an orange alert due to severe maritime agitation for Madeira's northern coast and Porto Santo, expecting waves up to 12 meters.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has announced an orange weather alert for the northern coast of Madeira and the island of Porto Santo. The alert, which is due to severe maritime agitation, will be in effect from 3 p.m. on Thursday, February 5th, until noon on Friday, February 6th.

According to the IPMA, during this period, waves from the northwest are anticipated to reach a significant height of 5 to 7 meters, with the potential for maximum wave heights to reach up to 12 meters. This situation necessitates heightened caution for residents and visitors in these areas, particularly those engaging in maritime activities.

Prior to the issuance of the orange alert, a yellow alert was in effect starting from 7:09 p.m. on Tuesday, February 3rd, lasting until 6 a.m. on the following day. The escalation to an orange alert reflects the worsening weather conditions as the region braces for severe maritime disturbances.

Madeira, known for its stunning landscapes and as a popular tourist destination, often faces challenges due to its geographical location in the Atlantic Ocean, which subjects it to various weather phenomena. The current alert represents one of the severe weather conditions that can impact both local life and tourism.

Authorities are urging the public, especially those in coastal areas, to stay informed about the latest weather updates and to adhere strictly to safety advisories. It's crucial for tourists and locals alike to exercise caution and avoid areas known for risky sea conditions during the alert period.

The IPMA regularly updates its weather advisories to ensure public safety and preparedness. This proactive approach helps mitigate the risks associated with sudden changes in weather, particularly in regions prone to such fluctuations.
