Increased Drunk Driving Incidents in Madeira Amid Festive Season
Madeira GuideA rise in drunk driving incidents has been reported in Madeira, with local police stepping up road checks during the festive period.
In recent weeks, Madeira has witnessed a concerning increase in incidents of drunk driving. The Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP), responsible for maintaining public safety on the island, has reported dozens of such cases, highlighting the need for enhanced road safety measures during the festive season.
Between December 12 and 18, 2025, the PSP recorded 13 cases of drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol. This was a slight decrease from the 20 cases reported in the preceding week, from December 5 to 11. The data reflects the ongoing challenge of ensuring safe driving practices amid celebrations and festivities that often involve alcohol consumption.
The PSP regularly conducts road checks across Madeira, aiming to curb the incidence of drunk driving and enhance public safety. These efforts are particularly intensified during holiday periods, when the likelihood of alcohol-related incidents tends to rise. The recent statistics underscore the importance of such interventions and the continuous need for public awareness regarding the dangers of impaired driving.
Madeira, known for its vibrant celebrations and beautiful landscapes, attracts both locals and tourists who partake in various festivities. However, the combination of alcohol and driving poses significant risks, not only to those directly involved but also to other road users. Authorities urge all drivers to practice caution and prioritize safety, especially during times of celebration.
