Madeira residents and visitors are informed about significant changes to the Mobility Social Subsidy, including eligibility criteria and deadlines.

The Madeira Regional Government has announced crucial updates concerning the Mobility Social Subsidy, a financial aid designed to support residents and visitors in managing travel expenses. As of January 7, 2026, new legal frameworks have been introduced, affecting how and when the subsidy can be claimed.

One of the key changes is that travel tickets purchased up to January 14, 2026, can still be reimbursed under the rules effective until December 31, 2025. This transition period allows residents and travelers to adapt to the new system.

Additionally, a new electronic platform will be rolled out, with a grace period extending until June 30, 2026, to ensure users can seamlessly adjust to the updated application process.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Residents: Individuals of any nationality who have been residing in the Autonomous Region of the Azores or Madeira for at least six months at the time of application, along with their families.
  • Equivalent Residents: Individuals with fiscal domicile in another region (Mainland Portugal or EU/EEA member states, or countries with agreements with Portugal or the EU on free movement or equal status).

These updates are part of ongoing efforts by the Madeira Regional Government, in collaboration with the Secretary of Tourism, Environment, and Culture, to streamline travel benefits and make them more accessible. Further details are highlighted on the national government’s portal.
