The old primary school in Jardim do Mar has been handed over to a local association to become a vibrant community center, fostering sports, recreation, and cultural activities.

In a significant move to enhance community engagement, the Câmara Municipal da Calheta has officially transferred the historic building of the former primary school in Jardim do Mar to the Associação Desportiva, Recreativa e Cultural do Jardim do Mar (ADRJM). This initiative aims to breathe new life into the picturesque village by transforming the building into a dynamic center for sports, recreational, and cultural activities.

The agreement, which was formalized on February 3, 2026, involves a ten-year lease of the property, with the possibility of renewal. Doroteia Leça, the head of the local council, emphasized the importance of this project in promoting community cohesion and providing a dedicated space for the residents to gather and engage in various activities.

The building, which has stood as a landmark in Jardim do Mar, will now serve as the headquarters for ADRJM, hosting activities that cater to both the local community and visitors. This initiative is expected to not only preserve the architectural heritage of the area but also to invigorate the local cultural scene.

Jardim do Mar, known for its stunning coastal views and vibrant surf culture, will benefit from this project as it aims to attract more visitors and create opportunities for cultural exchange. The transformation of the school into a community hub reflects a broader trend on the island of Madeira, where historic buildings are being repurposed to serve contemporary needs.

This development is part of a larger strategy to utilize existing resources to foster community development and tourism on the island. As residents and tourists alike look forward to the opening of the new community center, the ADRJM is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing the cultural and recreational landscape of Jardim do Mar.
