Funchal's iconic Market Night, a vibrant event that attracts thousands of visitors to the heart of Madeira, concluded with the collection of 17.5 tons of waste. This figure marks an increase of nearly three tons compared to the previous year, as reported by Jorge Carvalho, the President of the Funchal City Council.
The event, celebrated annually, is a festive gathering where locals and tourists alike enjoy traditional Madeiran food, music, and cultural performances. Held at Mercado dos Lavradores, the night transforms the market area into a lively hub of activity.
Jorge Carvalho expressed satisfaction with the event's success and highlighted the "civic act" of waste separation, which accounted for four tons of the total collected. This initiative reflects an ongoing effort to promote sustainability and environmental awareness among attendees.
The clean-up operation, involving about 140 city workers, began in the early hours following the event. By 9 AM, the teams had restored the market area to its usual state, showcasing the city's commitment to maintaining cleanliness despite the large influx of visitors.
Funchal's Market Night is not just a celebration but also a reflection of the island's cultural heritage, drawing attention to the need for effective waste management in the face of growing tourist numbers.
