The Funchal Municipal Assembly recently approved the 2025 accounts during a session at the Civic Center of SĂŁo Martinho. The approval, which saw a majority vote, was not without reservations as opposition parties criticized the city's financial execution and social response strategies.
The 'Funchal Sempre Melhor' party led the approval with 26 votes, while the JPP and Chega abstained, and the PS voted against. Despite the approval, Nelson Ferreira from Chega expressed concerns over persistent issues, even though the report indicated a solid financial situation with improved liquidity and debt control.
Jorge Carvalho, president of the Funchal City Council, emphasized the financial health of municipal companies like Frente MarFunchal and SocioHabitaFunchal, which support residents and provide essential services. He announced a €6 million investment for requalifying a building on Rua da Infância, which will consolidate municipal services and offer public housing and parking.
In housing developments, the municipality has awarded contracts for 23 new units in Bairro da Ponte and plans for 71 more in Quinta das Freiras, demonstrating a commitment to improving local living conditions.
In a related session, the Assembly unanimously celebrated the 52nd anniversary of the 25th of April Revolution, a pivotal event in Portuguese history that also marks 50 years of democratic governance. The PS and JPP presented motions of praise to underscore its historical importance for Madeira.
