In a comprehensive effort to maintain the city's charm post-New Year celebrations, Funchal deploys 120 municipal workers for a city-wide clean-up.

In preparation for the aftermath of the New Year celebrations, the Câmara Municipal do Funchal (CMF) has announced a large-scale clean-up operation to restore the city to its pristine condition. A total of 120 municipal workers will be deployed on January 1st to tackle the litter and debris left behind by the festivities.

The clean-up initiative is a continuation of efforts that began in mid-December, focusing on the scenic viewpoints and surrounding areas of Funchal. The operation underscores the city’s commitment to maintaining its reputation as a pristine tourist destination.

Pre-New Year Efforts

On December 31st, a dedicated team of 12 workers from the CMF’s Environmental Department will be actively collecting waste throughout the Funchal city center until 8 PM. Their tasks include picking up discarded items such as cups, bottles, and napkins, as well as emptying overflowing public trash bins.

These efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure that the influx of tourists and locals celebrating the New Year does not leave a lasting negative impact on the city’s aesthetics and environment.

Why It Matters

Funchal's annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display is a significant event that attracts thousands of visitors, making efficient waste management crucial. The clean-up not only preserves the city's beauty but also reflects its dedication to sustainable tourism practices.

This initiative highlights Funchal’s proactive approach to environmental responsibility, setting an example for other tourist-heavy regions.
