The annual Market Night in Funchal, Madeira, resulted in 17.5 tons of waste, exceeding last year's figures. Despite the massive cleanup, no significant incidents were reported, marking a successful event.

The renowned Market Night in Funchal, Madeira, an eagerly anticipated event each December, concluded with the collection of 17.5 tons of waste, surpassing the previous year's tally of 14.6 tons. This increase highlights both the event's popularity and the challenges it poses in waste management.

The event, which takes place at the Mercado dos Lavradores, is a staple of Madeira's festive calendar, drawing locals and tourists alike. It features traditional food stalls, music, and cultural performances, creating a vibrant atmosphere in the heart of Funchal.

Jorge Carvalho, the President of the Funchal City Council, noted that of the total waste collected, four tons were sorted for recycling, thanks to civic-minded participants. This effort eases the workload of the city's sanitation teams, which were out in full force to restore normalcy after the festivities.

The cleanup operation employed approximately 140 staff from the Department of Environment, who worked tirelessly to ensure the city returned to its pristine state by morning. Their work was made more challenging by a minor incident where an awning collapsed on Rua Fernão de Ornelas. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Market Night in Funchal is not just a celebration but also a reflection of Madeira's vibrant culture and community spirit. The event's success, despite the logistical challenges, underscores the island's ability to host large-scale events while managing environmental impacts effectively.

As Madeira continues to attract visitors from around the world, the balance between cultural celebration and environmental responsibility remains a priority for local authorities.
