Madeira GuideAs Funchal prepares for the annual Noite do Mercado, the city is bustling with activity. Thousands are expected to gather, and the local government has organized a comprehensive clean-up operation.
Funchal, the capital of Madeira, is abuzz with excitement as the city gears up for its famous Noite do Mercado, an event that draws both locals and tourists. This festive night, held on December 23rd, marks a traditional Christmas market where last-minute holiday shopping and socializing take center stage.
As the sun sets, the streets around Mercado dos Lavradores, Placa Central, and the waterfront become increasingly crowded with people eager to partake in the celebrations. The market is not just a shopping frenzy but a cultural event that embodies the spirit of the island.
Enhanced Clean-Up Operations
In anticipation of the large crowds, the Funchal City Council has orchestrated a meticulous clean-up operation. Around 140 workers have been mobilized to maintain cleanliness throughout the event. These efforts include deploying 156 waste containers strategically placed around the market area to manage the expected influx of waste.
The clean-up team comprises a diverse group of personnel, including drivers, street cleaners, supervisors, and service chiefs. They will utilize a fleet of 25 vehicles, including sweepers, open-box trucks, water tankers, support mini-cars, and waste collection vehicles.
Logistics and Operations
The clean-up operation will commence at 6 AM on December 24th, extending throughout the day to ensure that the city returns to its pristine state. Key locations such as Rua Fernão de Ornelas and Avenida Arriaga are focal points for these activities.
The public restrooms in areas like Largo da Restauração and Jardim Municipal will have adjusted hours to accommodate visitors, staying open until midnight on December 23rd and reopening early on the 24th. This ensures that all amenities are available to support the influx of visitors.
