Funchal Faces Urgency in Revising Local Accommodation Rules
Madeira GuideWith the suspension of new local accommodation registrations ending in March, Funchal's City Council is urged to finalize regulatory revisions.
The City Council of Funchal is under scrutiny as political parties call for swift action on revising local accommodation (AL) regulations. With the provisional suspension on new AL registrations set to expire in March, the urgency to establish a revised regulatory framework has heightened.
Rui Caetano, a councillor for the Socialist Party (PS), emphasized the need for an updated regulatory framework during a recent council meeting. He highlighted the risks of allowing new registrations without proper regulation, which could affect residents' quality of life and housing rights.
The suspension was initially introduced due to controversies surrounding AL licensing in cooperative housing buildings. The council is now tasked with concluding studies on containment and pressure zones and presenting their findings before the suspension ends.
Councillors from the Chega party have also requested detailed written explanations from the municipal executive on their strategies and intentions concerning local accommodation policies. They stress the importance of transparency and clarity in the council's approach to prevent future regulatory loopholes.
During the discussions, the ongoing issue with the cooperative 'Cortel' was also raised. It involves the return of financial benefits previously granted under controlled-cost housing schemes. The council president promised to address these issues in the next meeting.
