In anticipation of the bustling Market Night festivities, a beloved tradition in Madeira, the Funchal city council has launched an extensive cleanup operation to ensure the city remains pristine. This year, the council has deployed 140 workers to manage the task of maintaining cleanliness amid the celebrations.
The Market Night, a significant cultural event in Funchal, draws locals and tourists alike into the heart of the city to enjoy live music, food stalls, and a vibrant atmosphere. To accommodate the large crowds, the city has strategically placed 156 waste containers throughout the event area, including 54 for recyclables, 4 for paper waste, 4 for glass, and 94 for general waste.
Employees from the Department of Environment will be actively circulating among the crowds, ensuring that trash bins are emptied regularly and any litter is promptly addressed. This proactive approach is designed to manage the high volume of waste generated during the event, which is crucial for maintaining the aesthetic and environmental standards of the city.
Market Night is not only a time for celebration but also a reflection of Madeira's commitment to sustainability. The local government’s efforts to manage waste efficiently highlight the importance of environmental consciousness even during large-scale events. This initiative reinforces Madeira's reputation as a responsible and welcoming tourist destination.
