Fuel Prices in Madeira to Drop Slightly Amid Tax Increase
Madeira GuideStarting Monday, fuel prices in Madeira will see a minor reduction, despite an increase in fuel taxes. Gasoline and diesel prices will decrease marginally, providing some relief to consumers.
Residents and visitors in Madeira will experience a slight decrease in fuel prices starting next Monday. This development comes even as the regional government has decided to increase taxes on petroleum products.
According to the latest decree published by the Regional Government's Secretaries of Economy and Finance, the price of unleaded gasoline IO 95 will drop to a maximum of €1.537 per liter from its current price of €1.539. Similarly, the price of road diesel will decrease to €1.417 per liter from €1.419.
Despite these reductions, the Regional Government has announced an increase in the Imposto sobre os Produtos PetrolĂferos e EnergĂ©ticos (ISP), which is the tax on petroleum products and energy. This tax adjustment, effective from January 19, follows the enactment of Portaria n.Âş 10/2026.
The decision to adjust both prices and taxes is part of a broader economic strategy by the regional authorities. While the decrease in fuel prices provides immediate relief to consumers, the tax increase aims to address budgetary needs and promote sustainable energy policies.
Madeira, an autonomous region of Portugal, often implements unique economic measures to balance local needs with broader national policies. These decisions are crucial for both residents and the tourism sector, as fuel costs can significantly impact transportation expenses.
