A firework ignited a fire in a 7th floor apartment in Funchal, Madeira, leading to a swift response from local firefighters.

On December 31, 2025, a fire was ignited in an apartment on the 7th floor of the Monumental Palace Apartments located on Rua Velha da Ajuda in Funchal, Madeira. The cause of the fire was identified as a stray firework, which set ablaze several materials on the balcony and a sofa inside the apartment.

The fire was first attended to by the apartment's residents, who attempted to douse the flames using buckets of water. The situation prompted the involvement of the Bombeiros Sapadores do Funchal, who dispatched 13 firefighters and four vehicles to the scene. The fire was successfully controlled, and ventilation efforts were underway to clear the smoke from the building.

This incident underscores the importance of fire safety, especially during festive seasons when fireworks are frequently used. Residents and tourists alike are urged to exercise caution and ensure that fireworks are handled responsibly to prevent such accidents.

Emergency Responses Across Funchal

In another incident on the same day, a 17-year-old motorcyclist lost control of his motorcycle and collided with a car on Rua João Paulo II. The young rider sustained knee injuries and was transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for treatment. This accident highlights the need for road safety awareness, particularly among young riders.

Earlier in the day, the Bombeiros Sapadores do Funchal were also called to a construction site on Caminho Novo de Santana, São Roque, where a worker was trapped under construction plates. Fortunately, the worker was conscious and was in the process of being assisted by the emergency services.

Moreover, on December 30, another fire incident occurred on Estrada Comandante Camacho de Freitas, São Martinho. The fire was caused by an electrical short circuit and was extinguished by the homeowner using an extinguisher, with nine firefighters attending the scene.
