Filipe Sousa, a JPP deputy, responds to criticism from Sérgio Gonçalves regarding his Brussels trip to address mobility issues between Funchal and Lisbon.

In a recent political confrontation, Filipe Sousa, a deputy from the Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) in the Portuguese Parliament, has publicly defended his agenda in Brussels. Sousa's visit was organized to discuss mobility issues between Funchal and Lisbon, a matter of pressing importance for Madeira's residents and tourists alike.

Filipe Sousa expressed his surprise and offense at comments made by Sérgio Gonçalves, a socialist MEP from Madeira. Gonçalves had criticized Sousa's trip, suggesting it was unnecessary and questioning its legitimacy. This prompted a strong response from Sousa, who labeled the remarks as a 'vile attack' on his dignity and efforts for Madeira.

The visit to Brussels was made at the invitation of the VOLT party, aiming to address the ongoing challenges of air and sea mobility that affect the connectivity of the Madeira region with mainland Portugal. This issue is crucial for both the local economy and the tourism sector, which relies heavily on efficient transport links.

In an official statement, Sousa criticized the use of terms like 'allegedly' in the media coverage of his trip, which he felt undermined the seriousness of his work. He also pointed out the irony of past trips by journalists invited by Gonçalves, allegedly under the guise of addressing 'fake news'.

Sousa’s visit included meetings with European Commission representatives following a formal complaint he lodged concerning the current mobility model. He emphasized that his agenda was focused on genuine issues impacting Madeira and expressed frustrations over what he described as 'institutional jealousy'.

'I was judged and offended in my dignity and the seriousness I bring to my work for the Madeirans, without being given the chance to defend myself,' lamented Sousa, highlighting the lack of fair discourse in the political arena.
