Christmas Day in Madeira saw emergency services responding to multiple incidents, including a car accident involving a newborn and a fire in Ponta do Sol.

On the evening of December 25, 2025, Madeira's emergency services were actively engaged in responding to several incidents, ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and visitors alike.

Car Accident on the Via Rápida

A dramatic car accident occurred on the Via Rápida, in the tunnel of Viveiros, heading from Funchal to Caniço. The accident involved a newborn, just one month old, and a man who sustained minor injuries. Both were transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for precautionary medical evaluation. The response team included eight personnel and three vehicles from the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses (BVM), as well as an ambulance from the Portuguese Red Cross (CVP). The local police (PSP) and Vialitoral were also on the scene to manage traffic and ensure safety.

Fire in Ponta do Sol

Earlier that evening, firefighters from Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol tackled a brush fire in the area of Poios, Ponta do Sol. The fire, believed to have been started by a hot air balloon or fireworks, was located on a hillside behind the old PSP station. A team of five firefighters, supported by two vehicles, successfully contained the blaze after about two hours of effort.

Assistance to an Elderly Resident

In another incident, the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses were called to a residence on Rua Pedro José de Ornelas in Funchal. They forced entry to assist a man in his seventies who was experiencing health difficulties. He was promptly transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça after receiving initial care.

These incidents highlight the readiness and efficiency of Madeira's emergency services, crucial in maintaining safety during the busy holiday period.
